Complex Trophic Interactions in Kelp Forest Ecosystems
The distributions and abundances of species and populations change almost continuously. Understanding the processes responsible is perhaps ecology s̓ most fundamental challenge. Kelp-forest ecosystems in southwest Alaska have undergone several phase shifts between algaand herbivore-dominated states in recent decades. Overhunting and recovery of sea otters caused the earlier shifts. Studies focus...
متن کاملAgricultural capacity and conservation in high biodiversity forest ecosystems.
Agricultural development is a leading cause of habitat destruction that increasingly threatens global biodiversity. To help understand the likelihood and implications of agricultural expansion in areas of high conservation importance, this article examines agricultural suitability in forested portions of biodiversity hotspots and tropical wilderness areas, regions with especially rich concentra...
متن کاملAre more complex physiological models of forest ecosystems better choices for plot and regional predictions?
Process-based forest ecosystem models vary from simple physiological, complex physiological, to hybrid empirical-physiological models. Previous studies indicate that complex models provide the best prediction at plot scale with a temporal extent of less than 10 years, however, it is largely untested as to whether complex models outperform the other two types of models at plot and regional scale...
متن کاملUnintended Consequences of Conservation Actions: Managing Disease in Complex Ecosystems
Infectious diseases are increasingly recognised to be a major threat to biodiversity. Disease management tools such as control of animal movements and vaccination can be used to mitigate the impact and spread of diseases in targeted species. They can reduce the risk of epidemics and in turn the risks of population decline and extinction. However, all species are embedded in communities and inte...
متن کاملHuman population and socioeconomic modulators of conservation performance in 788 Amazonian and Atlantic Forest reserves
Protected areas form a quintessential component of the global strategy to perpetuate tropical biodiversity within relatively undisturbed wildlands, but they are becoming increasingly isolated by rapid agricultural encroachment. Here we consider a network of 788 forest protected areas (PAs) in the world's largest tropical country to examine the degree to which they remain intact, and their respo...
